What is a wireless overboard alarm?

OLAS tags transmit constantly to a central unit or mobile app via Bluetooth while onboard. If a crew member goes overboard and the connection is lost, the system instantly triggers an alarm. The alarm gives a clear alert and the MOB GPS position is automatically stored using the OLAS mobile app or via connected NMEA 2000 systems, helping the skipper react quickly and return to the casualty.

Which OLAS is right for you?

The OLAS System

How OLAS can fit into your boating

1. OLAS wearable tags

Small, lightweight devices worn on the wrist, lifejacket, clipped to clothing, or attached to equipment.

  • Continuously transmit a signal
  • Waterproof and designed for marine environments
  • Trigger alerts if submerged or out of range

2. Receiver / hub (base station devices)

A central onboard unit that tracks all connected tags. Examples include:

  • Dedicated OLAS receivers
  • Smart relay devices like engine kill-switch hubs

These manage the system and trigger alarms when a tag is lost.

3. Mobile app (OLAS smartphone app)

A phone-based control and monitoring system that:

  • Tracks all connected crew
  • Logs “safe zones” and ranges
  • Sounds alarms on loss detection
  • Can act as the primary receiver on smaller vessels

4. Alarm system

When a man overboard event is detected:

  • Loud audible alarm sounds onboard
  • Visual alerts appear on devices
  • Helps crew respond instantly and locate the incident

5. Engine cut-off integration (MOB safety function)

In more advanced setups, OLAS can automatically:

  • Kill or throttle the engine when a MOB is detected
  • Prevent the vessel from moving away from the casualty
  • Improve recovery time significantly

This is a key feature in systems like the OLAS Guardian Pro MOB engine cut-off system.

6. Expandable system / accessories

Depending on configuration, OLAS can also include:

  • Multiple tags for crew tracking
  • Integration with navigation electronics (in some setups)
  • Mounting kits or relay units for different vessel sizes
